2026 World Cup: Morocco earns valuable point against Brazil

Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening Group C match of the World Cup on Saturday, with Vinicius Jr’s moment of brilliance cancelling out an impressive first-half strike from Ismael Saibari.
The five-time world champions endured a difficult start against a well-organised Moroccan side that looked sharper and more dangerous in the opening exchanges.
Morocco’s bright beginning paid off in the 21st minute when Saibari capped a lightning-fast counter-attack with a clinical finish. The midfielder burst through the heart of Brazil’s defence before slotting home after being released by an incisive through ball from Brahim Diaz.

However, Brazil’s quality eventually shone through. Vinicius Jr restored parity in the 32nd minute with a superb individual effort, cutting inside from the left flank before curling an unstoppable right-footed strike into the top corner beyond the reach of the Moroccan goalkeeper.
The goal breathed life into Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who emerged after the break with greater urgency following a series of tactical changes by the Italian coach.
Brazil enjoyed more possession in the second half and pressed higher up the pitch in search of a winner. Yet Morocco remained disciplined defensively, sitting deep and frustrating the South Americans with a compact low block.
Despite Brazil’s increased control, clear-cut opportunities proved difficult to come by as Morocco stood firm to protect their point.
The result leaves both teams with a share of the spoils to begin their Group C campaign, with Morocco earning another notable result on the world stage while Brazil were left to reflect on a frustrating afternoon despite Vinicius’ stunning equaliser.
