A strong political wave is gathering momentum in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas intensify calls on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, to enter the governorship race.
The appeal forms part of a broader movement within the influential Ngwa bloc, where community leaders have openly endorsed Kalu as their preferred candidate for the state’s top seat.
The call was made during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Chief Uzoma Ihuka to contest as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the House of Representatives, representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Speaker expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing it as a unifying force that has strengthened the APC nationwide.
He noted that while other political parties grapple with internal crises, the APC remains stable, focused, and committed to delivering meaningful progress for Nigerians.
According to Kalu, the level of development being witnessed under the APC-led Federal Government is only a preview of greater achievements ahead, particularly for Abia State.
The event also witnessed a significant wave of defections from opposition parties, especially the Labour Party, as new entrants cited renewed hope, purposeful leadership, and visible progress within the APC as reasons for joining the ruling party.
The defectors were formally received, marking a boost to the party’s grassroots strength in Isiala Ngwa.
Kalu assured the new members of inclusive governance and people-oriented leadership, emphasizing the APC’s commitment to engaging communities directly, identifying their needs, and implementing practical solutions to improve livelihoods.
Responding to mounting calls for his governorship ambition, Kalu acknowledged the growing support from across the state, including Bende and Obingwa.
While appreciating the confidence reposed in him, he stated that he would make his position known in due course.
He explained that any formal declaration would be made in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, in line with constitutional and political significance.
“I have received your request for me to run for governor of Abia State, and I will respond in the coming days,” Kalu said. “I want to invite all of you to the state capital, Umuahia, where such a decision rightly belongs.”
He added that a formal invitation would soon be extended to stakeholders across the state to converge in Umuahia, where he would give a definitive response to the growing calls.
The event ended on a high note, marked by renewed optimism, strengthened party unity, and clear signals of the APC’s rising influence in Abia State.
