2027: ADC keeps opposition coalition door open to challenge Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said it is still open to rebuilding a broad opposition coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this while discussing the opposition’s preparations for the forthcoming elections and other national issues.
Abdullahi said the ADC remained convinced that a united opposition would have a stronger chance of defeating the ruling party, stressing that efforts to bring different opposition groups and political interests together had not been abandoned.
According to him, the possibility of a fresh coalition remains open because the party believes that greater unity among opposition forces would improve their chances at the polls.
“We still have not given up the possibility,” Abdullahi said, noting that the ADC was among the parties that initially championed the coalition-building effort.
He added that the party believes “the window has not closed” for opposition groups to work together ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The development comes after Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who were previously associated with the coalition arrangement, moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Obi and Kwankwaso reportedly left the ADC in May 2025, citing internal disagreements and legal challenges surrounding the party.
Following their departure, the ADC held its presidential primary and selected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate for the 2027 election.
The party subsequently picked former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku’s running mate, as it intensifies efforts to position itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the election.
