The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday received the report of its Constitution Review Committee ahead of the 2027 general elections, reiterating its commitment to strengthening internal democracy, transparency, and accountability as it received.

In his speech at the presentation of the report at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, stated that the ongoing constitutional review reflects the party’s resolve to align its structure with current political realities and position itself as a credible alternative.

Senator Mark, who was represented at the ceremony by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserihenmen Osunbor, described the party’s constitution as more than a guiding document, stressing that it embodies the collective aspirations of its members.

In his words, “The review is not a routine exercise. It is a painstaking process that requires wisdom, inclusiveness, and foresight”.

He lauded members of the committee for what he described as diligence and patriotism”.

Mark stressed the importance of broad consultations across states, zones, and key stakeholders, adding that such inclusiveness reinforces the party’s belief in collective ownership.

He said, “As we receive this report today, the National Working Committee will carefully study its recommendations to ensure they align with our core values of fairness, justice, and equity”.

He, however, cautioned that no constitution, regardless of how well crafted, can substitute for discipline and commitment among party members, emphasizing that adherence to rules remains critical to party cohesion.

While speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Etigwe Uwa (SAN), stated that the committee’s work was designed not only to strengthen the ADC but also to serve as a model for political party administration in Nigeria.

The proposed amendments, he said, include affirmative action provisions recommending 30 percent representation for women and 20 percent for youths, as well as measures to ensure the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Uwa furthervdisclosed that the committee introduced a structured arbitration framework to address internal disputes and reduce litigation, which has been a recurring challenge in party politics.

His words, “We aimed to create a constitution that addresses long-standing issues within Nigeria’s political party system and positions the ADC for future growth”.

Uwa added that the committee emphasized adaptability and innovation, proposing a greater role for technology in party administration and recommending the inclusion of professionals with proven leadership experience to strengthen governance within the party.

While acknowledging that the document is open to further refinement, Uwa expressed confidence that its adoption would significantly enhance the party’s internal processes and competitiveness.
