The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to suffer setbacks in Bauchi State following the defection of another member of the House of Representatives to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Aliyu Misau, who represents Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency, formally announced his departure from the PDP during Wednesday’s plenary session of the House of Representatives.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read Misau’s defection letter on the floor of the House, informing lawmakers of the latest development.
In the letter, the lawmaker attributed his decision to quit the PDP to the lingering internal crisis and persistent factional divisions that have continued to plague the opposition party.
Misau’s defection adds to the growing list of federal lawmakers from Bauchi State abandoning the PDP for the APM, raising concerns about the party’s cohesion in one of its traditional strongholds.
The latest move comes barely a week after four other members of the House of Representatives from Bauchi State dumped the PDP and joined the APM.
The wave of defections has fueled speculation about shifting political alliances in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the development could strengthen the APM’s influence in Bauchi while further weakening the PDP’s structure if efforts to reconcile aggrieved members fail.
Although the PDP remains one of the major political forces in the state, the recent exits suggest growing dissatisfaction among some elected officials over the party’s internal affairs.
The recurring complaints about unresolved disputes and factional conflicts have become a common theme among defectors, reflecting the challenges confronting the party’s leadership.
With five federal lawmakers now having left the PDP for the APM within days, attention is turning to whether more defections could follow in the coming weeks.
The development marks another significant test for the PDP as it seeks to stabilize its ranks and reposition itself ahead of the next electoral cycle.
