Two weeks after the expiration of the May 30 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conclusion of primary elections, deep anxiety has gripped political aspirants across Nigeria. Leading political parties have continued to delay the official publication of their candidate lists for the 2027 general elections, leaving many flagbearer-hopefuls entirely in the dark.
The prolonged silence has triggered widespread allegations of manipulation, high-handedness, and imposition. Aggrieved aspirants within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are openly accusing party leadership of tampering with the democratic process to favor preferred individuals.
APC caught in legal, financial quagmire
The situation sparked a wave of protests across several states last week, spearheaded largely by sitting senators who failed to secure return tickets. Notable among them is Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North), who publicly alleged that he was deliberately schemed out of the race by the state government.
Prior to the primaries, President Bola Tinubu had signaled that state governors would spearhead the conduct of the exercises in their respective domains. Political analysts note that this window allowed governors—especially recent defectors to the APC—to aggressively plant loyalists who crossed over with them, leaving established party members sidelined.
Sources reveal that the outcome has created a crisis for the APC National Working Committee (NWC). President Tinubu, who reportedly did not anticipate that up to 40 sitting lawmakers would lose their tickets, had favored a return option for first-term legislators to maintain stability in the Red Chamber
Consequently, unsuccessful aspirants are now demanding a full refund of their nomination fees. Beyond the statutory N30 million paid for the expression of interest and nomination forms, the politicians claim they lost millions more to mobilization and logistics.
“Since the party knew it was going to handpick candidates through forced consensus, it shouldn’t have allowed us to purchase forms and waste money on meaningless campaigns,” an aggrieved aspirant stated anonymously. “If President Tinubu truly directed automatic tickets for serving lawmakers, then collecting money from other aspirants under false pretenses is fraudulent. The President must intervene and ensure we are refunded to the last kobo, with compensation.”
Disillusionment rocks the opposition NDC
The narrative is equally fractured within the opposition NDC, where supporters expected a departure from traditional political maneuvers following the entry of its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
Instead, multiple aspirants have accused the party hierarchy of auctioning tickets to the highest bidders rather than rewarding popularity and local acceptability. While the NDC shielded itself somewhat by only collecting fees for expression of interest forms, aspirants argue the party still engaged in a charade of fairness.
The internal friction has stalled administrative progress; despite promises to publish its official candidate roster immediately following its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting five days ago, the NDC has yet to release the list.
Atiku’s victory sparks rebellion in ADC
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing its own existential friction after declaring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the winner of its presidential primary.
The outcome was swiftly and openly rejected by rival contenders, including former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi and former development banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Both heavyweights have accused the party leadership of heavily manipulating the voting process to guarantee Atiku’s victory.
The clock is ticking
With internal party structures stretched to their limits by bitter petitions and demands for compensation, the waiting game cannot continue indefinitely. Under the strict provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, political parties face a hard statutory deadline to make their final rosters public and submit the verified names of their flagbearers to INEC. No doubt, the coming days will force the hands of party executives nationwide.
