A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, Chief Bemgba Iortyom, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Iortyom made his ambition known during a visit to the immediate past Governor of Benue, Samuel Ortom, at his Abuja residence on Wednesday, where he also received his blessing.

The PDP stalwart said his decision was anchored on his long-standing loyalty and service to the party since its formation in 1998, noting that he has remained committed to the party both in and out of power.

He recalled serving the party in several capacities, including eight years as Benue State Publicity Secretary and as National Chairman of the PDP Forum of State Publicity Secretaries. He added that he currently serves as Consultant on Media and Public Communications to the Benue PDP chapter.

According to him, his experience and extensive network within the party position him as a strong candidate capable of mobilising support for victory in the 2027 polls.

Iortyom also highlighted his involvement in community development initiatives across the state, expressing confidence in his ability to attract development to rural areas and mobilise citizens for collective progress.

On security, he said the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017 remains the most effective solution to the herders-farmers crisis. He pledged to revive its enforcement if elected, while promoting peaceful coexistence among residents.

He further promised to address economic challenges by curbing capital flight, restoring the state’s economic and cultural integrity, and fostering civility among citizens.

“My administration will prioritise the restoration of security, unity and respect among the people, while ensuring that no part of the state is controlled by criminal elements,” he said.

Iortyom added that his government would not cede authority to terrorists or outlaws, but would focus on rebuilding the state’s territorial, economic and cultural stability.

The former PDP spokesman holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) degree from Moses Adasu University, Makurdi, and bears the traditional title of Vande-U-Mbaiwer (Rock of the Mbaiwer Kindred).
