The political crisis within the Labour Party appears to be creating new possibilities for realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, as youth leaders in the faction led by Julius Abure have moved to explore cooperation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The youth leaders have mandated their National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, to begin consultations with the APC and groups supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a possible political alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The move followed a virtual meeting held on October 2 involving Ahanotu, members of the Labour Party’s national youth leadership, five zonal youth leaders and 32 state youth leaders.
The development was disclosed by the Edo State Labour Party Youth Leader, Ken Omusi, in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday.
According to the statement, the discussions were driven partly by concerns among some youth leaders over what they described as inadequate recognition, engagement and support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 elections.
The participants also expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the party amid its prolonged internal crisis, while calling for a political platform that would provide greater opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment and involvement in national decision-making.
The youth leaders also reviewed policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration in areas including youth empowerment, human capital development, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, security and workers’ welfare.
The discussions, however, were not presented as unanimous endorsement of the administration, with participants reportedly expressing varying views on the policies and their implications for Nigeria’s development.
Following the deliberations, Ahanotu was directed to open discussions with relevant stakeholders in the APC, Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups to determine the possibility of political cooperation.
The proposed realignment is yet to amount to a final decision by the Labour Party as a whole. Rather, the youth leaders are seeking consultations before deciding their next course of action.
They have proposed a physical meeting in Abuja where the outcome of Ahanotu’s consultations will be reviewed and further steps determined.
The development adds another dimension to the political repositioning ahead of 2027, particularly within a Labour Party that has continued to experience internal disputes over its leadership and political direction.
For now, the focus is on consultations and consensus-building among the youth leadership before any formal political alignment is announced.
