The Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement, Seyi Makinde, has promised to serve only one term of four years if elected president in 2027.
Makinde made the pledge on Saturday during the APM town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, where he promised to tackle insecurity, poverty, electricity shortages and other challenges facing the country.
He described his proposed administration as a transitional government of national unity that would prioritise inclusiveness and national development.
“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.
The governor’s pledge comes amid growing political debate over power rotation between the North and South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has also promised to serve a single term if elected.
Makinde said his administration would be committed to finding solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, adding that it would listen to citizens and avoid politicising issues affecting their welfare.
“My promise to you, the North-East and the people of Nigeria is this: we will be sincere in finding solutions to the challenges that we are faced with,” he said.
“We will not play politics. We will not undermine your rights. We will ensure that we tell you the exact truth. We will listen to you. Solutions can come from anywhere.”
The APM candidate also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to fulfil its campaign promises, particularly on electricity supply.
Makinde said the administration had promised to address the country’s electricity challenges but had yet to deliver the expected results.
“The current administration came in and told us that it had the magic wand to solve the challenges confronting us.
“So, we are all aware that they have failed to provide electricity and other things they promised. So, I believe we all know how to cast our ballots,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to vote against the Tinubu administration in 2027, describing the election as an opportunity to change the country’s political direction.
The governor said the proposed change would mark the end of what he called the “politics of lies and deceit”.
He also faulted the Federal Government’s policies on compressed natural gas, electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude initiative.
Makinde called on the government to make its petroleum pricing template public, arguing that Nigerians deserved to understand how fuel prices were determined.
Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor and APM national leader, Bala Mohammed, described the party as the country’s leading opposition platform.
Mohammed said the party had the experience and capacity to contribute to Nigeria’s development.
He added that the APM was committed to inclusiveness, mutual respect and providing opportunities for Nigerians across the country.
The 2027 presidential election is expected to feature debates over security, the economy, electricity supply and the performance of the Tinubu administration.
