Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has formally left the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform backed by a growing political coalition.
Obi made the announcement on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in Enugu, confirming his move ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking at the event, the former Anambra State governor said his decision was driven by the need to build a broad-based movement capable of changing Nigeria’s current trajectory.

According to him, the defection marks the beginning of what he described as a rescue mission for the country.

“We are ending this year with hope that by 2026, we will begin a journey to rescue Nigeria,” Obi said.

He also pledged that the coalition would actively defend the integrity of the electoral process in the next election cycle.

“We will resist election rigging in 2027 using every lawful means available to us,” he added.
