20m Nigerians infected with Hepatitis B-Expert

As the world mark the World Hepatitis Day,  Dr. Hashim .M. Sa’idu, of Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KPRC) clinic yesterday, said close to 20 million Nigerians are currently infected with the viral Hepatitis B or C disease.

The Doctor disclosed this at an event, organised by the management of KRPC to mark the Hepatitis Day, with the theme “ Hepatitis: Think Again”, held in Kaduna.

He also said approximately 500 million people 1 in 12 worldwide are infected with the disease.

According to him, with a prevalence of 19 percent population, most Nigerians are not aware they are affected with Hepatitis B or C.

“Many persons with viral Hepatitis experience no obvious symptoms until serious liver damage has occurred. If left untreated, viral Hepatitis can lead to severe damage to the liver, liver cancer and the need for a liver transplant,” he said.

In his remarks, KRPC Managing Director, Engineer Sa’idu  A. Mohammed, through Director Services, Engineer Idi Muktar said KRPC has been partnering and will continue to partner with medical profession towards promoting the health of its staff.

According to him, the lecture was organized by KRPC, as part of their social responsibility to their staff to educate them on the danger of Hepatitis in the country.
