50-year old man in court over N200, 000 theft

A 50-year-old man, Christian Ike, who allegedly obtained N200, 000 by false pretences, on Wednesday, appeared before a Shomolu Magistrates’ Court, in Lagos.

Ike, who resides at No. 10, Bishop St., Somolu, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining by false pretence.

The prosecutor ASP Akinlabi Adegoke, told the court that the accused, in December 2012, obtained a loan facility from a thrift society, Micro-trust Multipurpose Society, located at Fadeyi, Lagos.

Adegoke alleged that Ike, who was then a member of the thrift society, had under the guise of obtaining a regular documented loan facility, absconded with the N200, 000 he borrowed.

“Ike was a member of the thrift society when he approached the management to obtain a loan facility of N200, 000.

“He provided documentation for the process before he was granted a N200, 000 loan; Ike subsequently absconded with the money and has refused to pay back”, Adegoke told the court.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Lawof Lagos state, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 312 prescribes 15 years imprisonment for a person convicted of obtaining by false pretence.

Ike, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Bola Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Oct. 7 for trial. (NAN)
