6 feared killed as trailer crashes into river in Edo

A trailer lorry with the inscription ‘Horn before overtake’ conveying goods worth millions of naira on Tuesday crashed into the popular River Okhuahae, leaving six persons including the driver feared killed inside the water.
Eyewitness, Monday Osagie told journalists that no fewer than six trailers loaded with goods crashed out of their way into the bush, and their goods destroyed.
He said the incident occurred in the early hours, adding that the trailer driver identified as Dalandi Musa allegedly dozed-off on the stirring as he suddenly veered out of the road on his way to the eastern state to crash into the River Okhuahae with six persons including himself drowned as their bodies were yet to be found.
It was gathered towards the end of every year, reckless drivers including trailer drivers are bedeviled on the Okhuahae bridge as either they crash into the river, or somersault into the bush.
In the last two years, investigation had shown that the popular Okhuahae bridge’s fear of the unknown is the beginning of wisdom, particularly while driving across with on deplorable holes of death traps.
The Delta State Federal Road Safety Corps Commander, Mr. Random Kulven who spoke to journalists on the frequent crashes of trailers into various rivers on the Benin-Asaba Expressway, disclosed that combined team officials of the FRSC had a tough battle to ensure the victims were rescued, as their efforts however, failed to yield positive results.
He said: “officers and men of the FRSC in Delta were on their way to Benin when they ran into the incident and they tried their best possible unfortunately, the victims were not found into the water, frequent crashes of vehicles including trailers into various rivers on the expressway is usually the fault of the drivers who often dozed off on the stirring, and before realizing they have crashed into the river.”
Sources said the accident attracted several people to the scene which also resulted in several hours holdup until the intervention of the officials of the FRSC.
