As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians”,
In a Statement sign by the Director of Media of CONYSSA Comrade Maryam Aminu in Abuja yesterday, the Orgànisation’ calls for more youths Participation in Governance among other demands.
“This day marks a significant milestone in our nation’s history, and as we reflect on our journey to nationhood, it is crucial to acknowledge the vital role of Nigeria’s youth in shaping the future of our country, especially in the areas of security and safety”.
“ NIgeria has faced various security challenges over the years, ranging from terrorism to banditry, communal clashes, and other forms of violence. Despite these challenges, Nigerian youth have continued to show resilience, innovation, and dedication in contributing to national security through various initiatives, including volunteer efforts, community policing, and digital solutions aimed at promoting peace and safety”.
“ In recognition of the immense potential of young people in safeguarding our nation, CONYSSA reiterates the need for increased youth engagement in security-related matters. As the bedrock of society, the youth must be empowered with the necessary skills, resources, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national security efforts”.
“ On this momentous occasion, CONYSSA and Nigerian youth are calling on His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to give his assent to the Peace Corps Bill. The establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps would play a pivotal role in bolstering national security by mobilizing young Nigerians to contribute actively to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and intelligence gathering across the nation.
The Peace Corps, once formalized, will create job opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians, while also equipping them with the skills necessary to prevent crime and mediate in community conflicts. Its role in bridging the gap between security agencies and the public cannot be overstated, as it will enhance youth participation in community security initiatives and promote a culture of peace among the citizenry”
We urge the President to consider this critical step as part of his administration’s broader strategy to tackle insecurity and youth unemployment, both of which remain major concerns for the country.
The group also call on the Government at all to focus on key areas that will affect the Youths positively, such as :
“Youth Empowerment for Security Leadership: CONYSSA calls on the federal government to implement more robust policies that equip young Nigerians with the necessary tools to participate in decision-making processes related to national security. Platforms must be created to harness the energy, creativity, and innovation of Nigerian youth in finding solutions to contemporary security challenges”
“Education and Skill Development: The Nigerian government must prioritize education and technical skill development, particularly in areas of cybersecurity, surveillance technology, and intelligence gathering. Investing in these areas will not only create job opportunities for young Nigerians but also strengthen the nation’s overall security framework” .“Community-Based Security Initiatives: CONYSSA urges the government and relevant stakeholders to support community-based security initiatives led by youth. These grassroots efforts are instrumental in preventing local conflicts, reporting suspicious activities, and fostering peace at the community level. By empowering youth in rural and urban areas, we can ensure that every Nigerian is an active participant in safeguarding their immediate environment”.
“ Collaboration Between Youth and Security Agencies: Effective security requires collaboration. CONYSSA calls for stronger partnerships between young people and security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, Civil Defence, and other paramilitary organizations. By fostering trust and improving communication channels, the youth can serve as the eyes and ears of our communities, providing valuable intelligence to prevent crimes before they occur”.
“ As Nigeria marks this important Independence Day, CONYSSA calls on all Nigerian youth to rise to the occasion. The security of our nation is our collective responsibility. We must unite, act with purpose, and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our beloved country. Together, we can build a Nigeria where peace reigns, opportunities abound, and every citizen feels safe and secure.
