Why multiple power substations are being built, rehabilitated – Fashola

The Minister of Power,Works and Housing ,BabatundeRajiFasholahas said the reason behind building and rehabilitation of multiple substations is for distribution and transmission of improved electricity supply across the country .
Fashola disclosed the development in Yola Monday at the 27th Monthly meeting of the Honourable Minister of Power ,Works and Housing with power sector participants stressing that these substations built are to improve efficiency and effectiveness in electricity distribution.
“In line with the policy of President Muhammad Buhari’s administration on incremental power,TCN is implementing the transmission rehabilitation and expansion programme which seeks to strengthen grid infrastructure for enhanced wheeling capacity that offers redundancy consistent with the requirements of N – I reliability criterion.
“With the contribution of the 132/33KV substation with 1 times 40 MV a transformer at Mayobelwa,customers of Mayobelwa,Jada,Numan,Ganye,Bambam,Cham and Lamurde to experience remarkable improvement in electricity supply,”Fashola explained.
He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the management of Yola Electricity Distribution Company in terms of generating revenue saying when the federal government privatisedDISCOs,Yola DISCO was the disadvantaged one due to poor revenue generation.
He also announced the upgrading of Mayobelwa and Jalingo substations from 132/33KV to 330/132/33KV substations adding that Yola- Jalingo 330KV line will cease to carry 132KV.
The Minister advised participants in the meeting who are top ranking officials of Electricity Distribution companies (Discos) to work assiduously in facing their raining season which he said is a serious challenge to distribution companies due to heavy rainfall associated with storm and falling of trees on distribution and transmission lines.
Earlier in his welcome address,Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company,Engineer Mustapha Baba Umara said the reduction in technical losses and improvement in the quality of voltage supplied to customers with construction of these new lines and substations financed by Federal government.
Engineer Umara told the gathering that the revival of the destroyed electricity facilities by the degraded Boko Haram Insurgents in Borno and Yobe states have assisted tremendously in increasing the revenue collection of the company in the zone.
Umara identified under staffing and metering of customers as among the major challenges militating against the company in the Zone appealing to the Federal government to intervene for more productivity.
Highlights of the programme included commissioning of Mayobelwa local Government Area transmission substation and Dedicated 33kvl line to AdamaBeverage,producers of Faro bottle water and juice drinks in Yola by the Minister.
