The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) popularly called Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) has deployed additional two hundred personnel to man traffic in different parts of the city during the Sallah holidays.
Our correspondent reports that the DRTS has about four hundred officers in its traffic division and had to increase the number with an additional two hundred men for the Sallah holidays operation.
A statement Public Relations Officer (PRO) signed, Kalu Emetu (VIO) said Mr. Dele Yaro, the head of operations in the Directorate said the aim is to enhance safer road during the celebration noting that traffic is likely to build up in certain areas, which was the reason the directorate had to increase the number of men on the road.
Yaro specifically mentioned praying grounds and Airport road where eid ground is located as the areas that will attract most worshippers including the political class and advised motorists to use alternative routes during the period.
He further explained that men and the directorate’s operational vehicles are to be stationed in most strategic places especially the relaxation centers which are expected to attract a lot of vehicular and human traffics.
He noted that the exercise within the period is not to arrest or impose penalties on defaulters but to ensure safety and free flow of traffic in different parts of the territory he however, cautioned that vehicle drivers must behave very well by obeying every traffic rule.
He warned owners of vehicles that are not road worthy not to bring them to the road as necessary actions will be taken against such persons and also advised road users not to over speed, not to drink and drive.
For visitors to the city of Abuja, the VIO head of operations advised them not to over speed as experience he said shows that this class of drivers always over speed because of good roads, which often leads to accidents.
