Confederation of African Football, CAf, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their performances in the Russia 2018 World Cup despite their group stage elimination.
Nigeria alongside Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal represented Africa in the four-year event but with group stages due to be concluded today, only Senegal is left to vie for the knockout stages.
Nigeria on Tuesday joined Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco among the early departures from the tournament after they lost 2-1 to Argentina.
But despite their early elimination, Africa football governing body, CAF commended the team for their performance adding that they made the continent proud.
“Hard Luck @NGSuperEagles. You did a great job and really make us proud,” CAF wrote on its Twitter handle.
Senegal remains the only African representative at the Russia World Cup. They will play their final group game today against Colombia. They will need a win to consolidate their chances while a draw will also see them through. However a loss will mean that no African country reached the Last 16 knockout stage of the tournament. Japan tops Senegal’s Group G with 4 points same as the African rep; Colombia is third while Poland brings the rear with no point. Japan will face Poland while Senegal will tackle Colombia in a high profile encounter.
In its debut in Korea/Japan 2002, Senegal defeated then defending champions, France 1-0 on her road to reaching the quarterfinals.
