The Minister of Mine and Steel Development, Malam Musa Sada, has inaugurated a 12-man governing board for the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) in Jos.
Sada while inaugurating the board said the decision would not have come at a better time than now when the minerals and metals sector is in the process of transformation which is aimed at diversifying the economy of the nation.
He said that the coming of the board would significantly enhance the operation and the overall performance of the centre.
“It is in line with the need to fulfil the constitutional requirements and the provisions of the Act establishing the centre that President Goodluck Jonathan found it necessary to reconstitute the board.
“The NMDC, Jos, is an agency of the Federal Government under the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development which derives its mandate by Decree 50 of 1992 to carry out research and development studies for the advancement of the solid minerals sector of the economy.
“The responsibility of the governing board shall be among others the formulation of the broad policies for the centre in accordance with the guidelines as may from time to time, be issued by the Federal
Government as well as ensuring full compliance with the provisions of the law that established the centre,’’ he said.
The minister said that the nominations of the board members were made purely in recognition of “your track record and dedication to duty as well as excellent performance in their chosen careers and fields of endeavour’’.
He said that the members were expected to bring their wealth of experience to bear on their duties as they contribute their quota in the quest to reposition the minerals sector.
In a remark, Mr Osifo Akpata, the Board Chairman, said the centre would serve as an engine of growth to the transformation agenda of Mr President,’’ he said.
Akpata thanked the minister for his quality leadership role, and promised to support the centre to achieve its objectives.
