Adamawa APC lawmakers’ caucus backs indirect primary

Adamawa All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers’ caucus in the National Assembly yesterday backed indirect primary as a mode of choosing candidates for the 2019 general elections.
Members of the Caucus that supported indirect primary include; Hon. Sadiq Ibrahim, Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, Hon. Abdulrazaq Namdas and Hon. Abdulrahman Shuaibu. Others are Hon. Adamu Kamale, Hon. Lawal Abubakar Garba, Hon. Philip Gutuwa and Hon. Talatu Yohanna.
The Chairman of the caucus, Senator Binta Masi Garba (Adamawa north) disclosed this in briefing at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
She said they are in full support of the decision of the State Executive Committee (SEC) that adopted indirect primaries.
She explained that their endorsement of indirect primaries was in “line with the provision of Article 20 of the APC constitution and the decision of NEC of our great party, which approved for each State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party to choose the mode of primary election best suited for the state based on the state’s peculiarity”
“We know as a fact that using the present register of members will certainly affect the credibility of the outcome of the primary election.
“Members of other political parties bent on destroying the APC in Adamawa state will intentionally cause confusion by claiming membership of the party if the primary election is conducted through direct mode and without an updated register of members.”
“Adamawa being one of the states having serious security challenges as a result of Boko Haram attacks cannot conduct peaceful election in some parts of the local governments in the northern part of the state especially in areas bordering the Sambisa forest.
“This unlike the ward congresses have much higher stake and are not holding in one day and may expose our members to attacks” adding that “logistics involved in conducting the elections through indirect mode is quite cheaper compared to direct means”, she said.
