Gov. Matawalle mulls death penalty for banditry, kidnapping

Governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle of Zamfara State has threatened that his administration will develop a law that will authorise the use of death penalty against anybody found as a party to killing, kidnapping and or cattle rustling activities in the state.
The Governor declared this yesterday while marking Democracy Day at Trade Fair complex Gusau the state capital, saying, the law will not exclude any person no matter what class he belongs, adding that, “Any community leader including traditional rulers found in romance with bandits must face the wrath of the law”.
He attributed the insecurity bedevilling the state to refusal of empowering teeming youths by the previous administrations, therefore, pledged to give priority to the empowerment and capacity development of youth by reviving skills acquisition centers with a view to acquire self reliance.
“My administration will focus on programmes that will actually give direct bearing on the common rural citizens to ensure that rural life is improved”, Matawalle has assured.
On the nation’s democratic progress, government Bello urged Nigerians to maintain the efforts and courage in the bid to develop a strong, stable and reliable democracy so that ‘’We can leave behind an enduring democratic legacy for the generations to come’’.
Speaking, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mahadi Ali Gusau, observed that, “Nigeria has every reason to appreciate the milestones achieved in the development and nurturing of put Democracy”.
He further said, ‘’We must admit that all globally advanced democracies have passed through turbulent moments’’, stressing that they have succeeded in recording laudable achievement through dialogue and citizens’ commitments to democratic values.
