The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila yesterday appealed to the British Government to assist Nigeria in the repatriation of stolen funds stashed in their country by some Nigerians.
He equally called on the British Government to ease the process of acquiring travelling documents to the United Kingdom in order to assist in deepening the relationship between the two countries.
The Speaker made appeal when he received the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catrina Liang, and the Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Atkinson in his office on Thursday.
The Speaker who emphasized the importance of the relationship between the two countries said the United Kingdom should assist in the Nigerian government’s anti-corruption drive.
He said: “Our relationships are the ones we enjoy, which is of mutual benefits to both countries, which we hope will continue to be that way.
“Through our bilateral relationships, you’ve contributed in so many ways to our political and economic development: in the areas of anti-corruption, our electoral process, your contributions to our displaced persons and the situation in the North East must also be commended.
“You have used your resources and manpower to assist us greatly. We hope to continue to engage each other meaningfully.
“We also thank you for supporting us and helping us to deepen our democracy over the years, but there’s still a lot to be done between our two countries.
“The issue of repatriation of stolen funds. One of the main thrust of this administration is anti-corruption, and one of the ways you can assist us is to push for the repatriation of the stolen funds.
“I believe there’s so much of that lodged in the United Kingdom, not because the UK is a safe haven, but because there’s been that long standing relationship, and we are just like brothers and sisters: Nigerians are more comfortable; it’s like a second home.
“But please we have to let them know that the second home is not a place to stash away slush or stolen funds,” the Speaker said.
Responding, the British High Commissioner Liang said Nigeria is a very important partner to Britain. She expressed the need to strengthen parliamentary relationships between the two countires and address the issue of anti-corruption and visa issuance.
She said: “We want Nigerians to come and visit, but if the funds were found to have been acquired illegally, then the process kicks in to try and retrieve these funds and the objectives is to return these funds to Nigeria.
“On anti-corruption, the parliament has a huge role to play to tackle corruption and the Petroleum Industry Bill is one of the areas to collaborate on corruption.
“On the visa issue, we have a team working on it, but it is overwhelming at times. I think to some extent, they are trying to find some means to ease up the system for the majority that want to come legally to study and to work. But we have protective order.
“If we are to focus too much on security aspect, it can damage our economic relationships. This is one area well taken, but we will try and progress with in the UK,” she said.

READ MORE  Anambra election: Radio Biafra ask IPOB to vote, sacks ex spokesman, Emma PowerfulBy Ese Awhotu with agency report Radio Biafra has directed members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra, IPOB to vote in the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 18. This is according to a broadcast by the Radio Biafra from 6am to 7am yesterday on 7240 KHZ, 41 meter-band, short wave, monitored in Abuja. Radio Biafra announced the dismissal of Comrade Emma Powerful as the spokesman of IPOB, alleging that he was one of the custodians of Mazi Kanu’s ill-gotten wealth as he allegedly joined him in misappropriating IPOB money. Emma Powerful was also accused of refusing to speak up for the release of those who were detained with Nnamdi Kanu and who are still in detention though Kanus has been released; Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, are still in prison. According to the announcement, “These are our brothers who were arrested at the same time with Kanu and they should not be forgotten. We hereby demand their release. Neither Emma Powerful nor Kanu, since his release, has spoken about them or appealed for the release of these our freedom fighters”, said the announcement. Radio Biafra also announced that “IPOB has never been a violent organization as the international community will never support any violent organization in its bid to actualize its dreams, no matter how compelling its case could be. “Once an organization begins to embrace violence, it will be labeled a terrorist organization. The era of threats, hate speeches, incitements, violence and intimidation, abuse and hooliganism are gone with the past and corrupt leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Nwanekaenyi Kanu.” Reports said that Radio Biafra directed all IPOB members world-wide to listen to tune in every morning on “7240 KHZ, 41 meter-band, short wave and at 9 PM on 11530 KHZ on 25 meter band. They can also listen to Radio Biafra on tunein.com, streamer.com, radio garden and other similar services that are available, on smartphones and computers, the announcement said. The broadcast directed IPOB members to go and participate in Anambra election and cast their vote for any candidate of their choice, saying “It’s your civic responsibilities to exercise your franchise, and IPOB has no candidate in the election. “Kanu and his cohorts including Uche Mefor and Emma Powerful cannot continue to feed fat on the blood of young innocent men in a misdirected and infantile adventure. We have ideological clarity and methodology in our struggle. Radio Biafra is back and alive and as we say failure to heed to IPOB directives has its consequences and Comrade Emma Powerful should know this. A word is enough for the wise.” So far, the radio has remained on air and has been dishing out its messages in both English and Igbo twice daily since Sunday November 12. So far too, the Directorship of the Radio Biafra and the new IPOB leadership appears not to have been challenged at all; instead, the new IPOB leader, Mazi Ezenwachukwu Sampson Okwudili seems to be consolidating his hold on IPOB.
