The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire yesterday decried the frequency medical tourism by high ranking public servants in the country stressing that the nation is losing huge resources on daily bases.
The Minister disclosed this at the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora 2020 budget defence session with the Ministry officials in Abuja on Thursday.
He said that medical tourism is a problem the ministry of health is yearly contending with and it is about people who had lost confidence in the nation’s health system.
According to him, the problem of medical tourism bothers on equipment and skills of specialized field of medical practice by doctors and other health professionals.
He, however, assured that the health ministry is liasing with embassies of foreign countries with a view to bringing on board professionals in the medical field that can come and work in Nigeria and solve this problem.
He further hinted that the Nigerian health authorities will deploy doctors that are consultants abroad to garner experiences from hospitals in Europe and America to stem the trend.
He also added that there is need for super-specialized hospitals for the treatment of kidney failure and another similar ailments of this nature.
Chairman of the House Committee Hon Tolulope Sodipe in a a brief remark assured the Minister and his team that the Committee had resolved that Nigerians in diaspora should be respected.
