Governor Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto state has challenged Nigerian Universities to undertake researches that would help in finding solutions to the myriads of problems affecting the country.
Wamakko spoke on Monday in Sokoto, while opening the First National Conference organised by the Faculty of Science, Sokoto state University.
The conference, jointly organised by the Faculty and an NGO, The Algebra Group, had as its theme, ‘’ Impact of Basic and Applied Sciences on Resource Acquisition and Management.’’
The governor was represented by the Speaker of the state Assembly, Alhaji Lawalli Zayyana.
‘’ The universities should also do more researches to further improve the living standard of the people. Wamakko said, pledging more support to the university to make it of ‘’ world class status.’’
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Nuhu Yaqub said that basic and applied sciences had helped mankind in solving virtually all challenges in the medical field.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Riskuwa Shehu, who spoke through Prof. Sani Dangoggo, said that the conference was timely, especially now that Nigeria has scarce resources. While the Guest Speaker, Prof Lawal Bilbis, who is Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Birnin Kebbi stressed the need for more attention to be given to the provision of quality education at all levels to fast track national growth and development.
