The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies in Kano State have declared their readiness for the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency by-election scheduled for September 19, 2026.
The election became necessary after the former state lawmaker representing Dawakin Kudu moved to the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency following a by-election triggered by the death of the former federal lawmaker, Hassan Danjuma.
Speaking after a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) at the INEC headquarters in Kano on Thursday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ambassador Abdu Zango, said arrangements had been made to ensure a peaceful, credible and transparent poll.
Zango said the meeting reviewed preparations covering security, logistics and the deployment of ad-hoc personnel.
“We deliberated on all the issues, including our level of preparation, security and logistics. INEC is ready, and the security agencies are also ready,” he said.
The REC said security agencies had assured the commission of adequate protection to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election.
He urged eligible voters in Dawakin Kudu to turn out in large numbers to exercise their franchise, assuring them of INEC’s cooperation.
Zango expressed confidence that the election would build on the peaceful conduct of the previous Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency poll.
He disclosed that non-sensitive materials had already been deployed to the area ahead of distribution, while about 2,000 ad-hoc personnel had been engaged for the exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the security agencies, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said agencies were working together to ensure adequate security before, during and after the election.
Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police Lawal Isa Mani, Bakori said movement would be restricted in the affected area from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on election day to facilitate the smooth conduct of voting.
He reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to working with other security agencies to maintain peace and order throughout the exercise.
