Uproar in Delta school as teacher allegedly flogs student to death

Protest over the death of a student allegedly flogged at Ekiugbo Grammar School in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State by the school teacher has continued to unsettle management of the school.
It was gathered that trouble erupted last week in the school following the death of one of the students identified as Kelvin Ogheneogaga after he was allegedly flogged by his teacher for sundry offences, a situation that led to his death as a result of suspected complications.
Angered by the situation, sources said that the students, many of whom at the Junior Secondary School took to protest to press home their pains including allegedly destroying the office of the principal while their protest lasted
But some of the students who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity described the incident as unfortunate, adding” we were begging the teacher ( name withheld) not to flog him because, Kelvin was not too fine but the teacher refused, before he was flogged and we don’t know if the flogging was what led to his death.”
The school principal, Mr F. Okpako, when contacted refused to make comments on the issue, saying that it is only the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education that has the right to speak to the press.
Confirming the death of the student, the Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwah said that investigation was ongoing in the matter, adding that the teacher in question had been invited for interrogation as details would be provided on the completion of investigation.
Unconfirmed sources said that the teacher had on the 26/2/2020 flogged the student for misconduct after which it was reported that the student on getting home developed some complications and was later rushed to the Ughelli Central Hospital by his family members where he gave up the ghost.
But the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah when contacted by journalists in Asaba, said he was yet to get details of the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing with a view to bringing the fact to the public, while none of the victim’s family members were ready to speak on the matter as they said they were awaiting the police investigation on the incident but however regretted the death of their son.
It was further gathered that the intervention of the police drafted from”A” Division, Ughelli returned normalcy to the school after the police vehicles were allegedly pelted with stones by the rampaging students who had beaten up the teacher to a pulp.
