The African Action Congress (AAC) has decried President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Professor Ibrahim Gambari as his new Chief of Staff.
In a statement issued by the party national chairman, Leonard Nzenwa, it said “AAC is not excited that after weeks of headhunting, consultation and political scrutinization, that Mr. President would name another septuagenarian on the departure lounge of becoming an octogenarian as the incumbent for a top and exerting job of administering the president’s private office.
“We see the Chief of Staff job as too strategic and one which requires fresh blood, both in biological and energy sense, to occupy the position, wondering why the continuous recycling of those who at best would be classified as Methuselah in corridors of power to continue to run rings around the country and mortgage its future.
“The African Action Congress moans that despite the high pool of competent young Nigerians, who have excelled in their various callings both at home and abroad, and with intimidating resumes and pedigrees, and who are desirous to serve their fatherland, Mr. President would turn the way of our aged fathers.
“The African Action Congress notes that many nations have moved on by ensuring that its cream of political and appointive officials at the highest level of governance and leadership are composed of energetic and well resourced young people.
“Appointment of Professor Gambari is a clear indication that the youths still have a long way to go in this country before they would be taken seriously.
“AAC is youth friendly and will at all times protect their interests and give them opportunity to serve their fatherland if voted into power.
“We urge great Nigerian youths to join AAC in our collective efforts in building a strong, virile, progressive and equitable democratic nation”, the party said in the statement.
