The Police on Tuesday arraigned nine persons before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly assaulting a policeman on duty.
The accused are Abiodun Akinlawon, 25; Aremu Kazeem, 43; Damilola Akinlawon, 27; Ajala Samuel, 18; Oluwagbemi Rachael, 40; Aremu Olasunkanmi, 31; Okebile Folorunsho, 31; Sulaman Abdurasaki, 38, and Akinlawon Yetunde, 20.
The accused, whose addresses are unknown, are standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.
The Prosecutor, ASP Olajide Michael, said that the accused committed the offences on March 27, at about 1:00 p.m. at the Customary Court Grade 1, Ota.
“The accused were fighting in front of the Customary Court, Ota, and the police officer with registration No. 455626 was trying to stop them from disturbing the court session when they pounced on him and beat him mercilessly.
“They also inflicted serious injury on his head, which caused him harm,” Michael said.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 83, 355, 356 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1 of the Revised Law of Ogun, 2006.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mrs Titi Bello, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety each in like sum.
Bello said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of gainful employment.
She said that the sureties should also provide tax clearance for the last one year, as part of the bail conditions.
The magistrate ordered that the addresses of the sureties must be verified by the police and adjourned the case till April 16 for mention. (NAN)
