Nigeria taekwondoist, Elizabeth Anyanacho has stated that her primary target is to win a medal for Nigeria at the 2020 Olympic Games holding in Tokyo, Japan next year.
The 2019 Africa Games bronze winner despite expressing her belief in achieving podium finish in Japan, the 21-year-old asked for support because “faith alone is not enough”
“I’m focused on winning an Olympic medal,” she said on her Twitter handle
Adding that “Faith is not enough. Your support matters.”
Miss Anyanacho participated at the 2019 African Games, winning a bronze medal at 67 kg. That feat qualified her for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
The 32nd summer Olympics commonly known as Tokyo 2020, is an upcoming international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.
Originally due to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the event was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite being rescheduled for 2021, the Games have retained the “Tokyo 2020” name for marketing and branding purposes.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will feature a record 33 competitions and 339 events held across 42 competition venues.
Elizabeth Anyanacho is one of the athletes Nigeria is banking on to do the country proud.
Nigeria has not had an appreciable impact recently in Olympic Games with 1996 Atlanta Olympic where the country won two gold medals in long jump and football event as the best Olympic year for the most populous black nation in the world.
Analysts are of the view that with right preparations, athletes like Elizabeth Anyanacho among others are capable of rewriting Nigeria’s Olympic history.
