The House of Representatives has asked the federal government to construct Doma military battalion in order to boost security in the southern senatorial district of Nasarawa state.

In a motion moved by Rep Mohammed Onawo (PDP Nasarawa), the House noted that the sum of one hundred million Naira was appropriated in the 2014 budget for the construction of the battalion and yet, the project has not been awarded.

The lawmaker added that the essence of the project is to boost security in the zone and the neighboring towns of Guma, Gwue West and Aguta in Benue state, which at the moment is threatened by frequent insurgents attacks resulting in loss of lives, property and other casualties, bringing about an increased situation of refuges and humanitarian calamities all over the state.

He expressed the concern that the essence of the project may be defeated if urgent measures is not taken to facilitate its execution. “The appropriated funds may be wasteful if action is not taken by parliament to ensure timely implementation of the project, and that non implementation may facilitate poor development, governance and security of the people and the state.”

The House directed its committees on works and army to investigate the circumstances behind the non-implementation of the project, recommend appropriate measures to overcome the challenges and report back to the House within one month.
