Man arraigned for threatening to kill wife and children

Crime_01A 37-year-old applicant, Mr Martins Ojobo, yesterday appeared in an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Karu, FCT, charged with threat to the life of his wife and children.

He was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Hadiza Shagari on a one-count charge of criminal intimidation.The accused however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr. Israel Nongo, told the court that the wife of the accused, Christiana Abbah, reported the case to the Apo police station, Abuja, on April 9.

Nongo alleged that the accused threatened the life of his wife and their two children following a disagreement.He said the accused went as far as sending his wife text messages that if she didn’t stay away from him, he would kill her and the children.

He said that the complainant was so scared and had no option but to report the matter to the station for further investigation.The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 397(B) of the Penal Code.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Alex Etim, made an oral application for bail for the accused, stating that it is a family matter that should have been settled amicably at home.He said that the charge was a mere allegation because the accused could not have threatened to kill his own children.

“I pray this honourable court to exercise its discretion in granting the accused person bail in the most liberal terms to enable him prepare for his defence,” he said.

In her ruling, Shagari admitted him to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum that must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.She adjourned the case until March 21 for further hearing. (NAN)
