Women lawyers beg Ganduje to domesticate Child Rights Act

Concerned by growing rape cases against minor and children, as well as random divorce cases in Kano, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), has appealed to Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to domesticate the Child Rights Act and Violance Against Persons Prohibition Act into Law.

Speaking while on familiarization visit on the Kano NUJ Council on Thursday, the Chairperson of the FIDA, Barrister Bilkisu Suleiman, said the domestication of the Child Rights Act after being infused with the State Sharia Laws, cases of minors rapes, Almajiri and other serious social vices would be taken care of.

She said today’s social vices that are disturbing the Northern Nigeria and Kano in particular can only be checked if there is  cogent law that would deter the perpetrators and provide accurate punishment against them.

“FIDA is doing all it could to ensure problems in family settings and the issue of Child Abuses that has to do with rapes is actively look into and those who are abusing them are brought to book”.

Barr. Suleiman, explained that the two acts- Child Rights Act and Violance Against Persons Prohibition Act which was earlier prepared and sponsored by the 14th Emir of Muhammadu Sanusi and submitted to the State Assembly, are being passed into Law and domesticated.

However, she said, “right now we are trying our best on awareness campaigns for our People’s to accept us and understand our missions, which is actually to correct the wrongs in the families.

“We are highly disturbed by the menace of Almajiri and Child Abuses which obtain times escaped unpunished, that is why we are doing all we could to ensure that the acts are been domesticated and infused accordingly”.

Speaking, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim said as Media Practitioners they are going to help the women lawyers to actualize their dreams of having the laws against Child and Women Violence.
