The registration of all commercial motorcyclists operating within the Gwagwalada Area Council will begin next week, the council’s Secretary, Alhaji Usman Yahaya, said yesterday in Gwagwalada.
Yahaya told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the registration was necessary due to the country’s security challenges, saying it would help in reducing crime in the area.
He said there was the need for only registered commercial motorcyclists to be allowed to operate in the area, with those registered being identified by their identity cards and uniforms.
“The registration is one of the measures the council has taken to maintain peace and security in the area.
“Though security is everybody’s business, but the present area council administration, led by Alhaji Abubakar Giri, has promised to tackle security matters in the area through this registration exercise,’’ the council secretary said.
He said the council, in collaboration with security personnel, as well as traditional rulers and religious leaders, normally held monthly meetings to discuss security issues in the area.
“Every month, we hold a meeting where we discuss security matters in the area.
“For us to achieve the best results, we involve the police, traditional institutions and religious leaders who will in turn take the message to the people at the various communities.
“The traditional institutions and religious leaders in the area have been helpful. They are our advocates for peace at the various communities,” Yahaya said. (NAN)
