Managing Director, Kano Road Transport Agency (KAROTA), Baffa Babba Dan’agundi has said that the state is witnessing drastic reduction in crimes following the ban on commercial tricycle operation from 10:00pm to 7:00am in the state.

Speaking to newsmen in Kano on Thursday, Dan’agundi said the purpose of banning the operation of commercial tricyclists, which is strictly to check criminal activities in the state, is paying off.

He noted that the decision was taken at the security council meeting, aimed at taming proactive measures, based on advices by security agents in the state.

“The purpose of the ban is for security reason. To take proactive measures, on advice by the security council of the state.

“Ordinarily, any responsible tricycle rider should close operation by 10pm.

“The ban has yielded fruits, because up to now, we haven’t recorded any security breach before and after the 10pm since the ban. Crimes have been drastically reduced,” he said.

Dan’agundi, who doubles as acting Managing Director, Kano State Consumer Protection Council, KCPC, said a taskforce is going round the city to ensure compliance, adding that the level of compliance is appreciable.

He noted that before the ban, armed robbery was rampant, phone snatching was the order of the day, adding that with the ban, the security has improved in the city.

According to him, only negligible number of the tricycle operators are criminal, noting however that “about 90 percent of them are responsible people, going out to look for what to feed their family and do it as lawful business.”
