Nigerian Army urged to pay benefits of retired Ecomog soldiers

A retired Trupper from Nigerian Army at the Armour Remo Battalion in Bauchi State, Shaibu Muhammed Lawal, has called on the leadership of Nigerian Army to deem it necessary to pay the benefits of 88 Ecomog soldiers who were retired in 2001.

Trupper Lawal who spoke on behalf of the Ecomog soldiers with peoples Daily correspondent in his residence in Gwagwalada on Saturday, saying that he joined Nigerian Army in 1995 with Army registration number 4668.

Lawal said: “From 2001 up till date almost 22 years now we sued the Nigerian Army to industrial court when we were retired without entitlements. But the judge in charge of our case did not pass the final judgement before he transferred the case to Appeal court in Abuja. And up till now the judgement is not passed in appeal court”.

He then charged Nigerian Army as well as the Federal Government to look into the matter of the retired Ecomog soldiers and do the necessary things for them in terms of their benefits.

He revealed that he travelled to Sieleone, Sudan and Liberia for the sake of sacrificing his lives for the nation, as he said the Ecomog soldiers were committed during their time in wagging war against external forces.

He also disclosed that due to the non-payment of the entitlements to the Ecomog soldiers many of them had died and others are suffering in silence.

Lawal, however, appealed to the Federal Government to engage the retired soldiers in the country in order to arrest the security challenges facing Nigerians.
