24,714 Abuja residents affected by flood in 2022 -Report

The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has disclosed that no fewer than 24,714 persons were affected by flood, in some parts of the Abuja, the nation’s capital city in 2022.

FEMA in its report explained that the flood which had affected 3 Area Councils out of the 6, also displaced 3,695 persons, with 131 property damaged.

According to the report released to newsmen by FEMA’s Director General, Abbas Idriss, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) had 20, 376 persons affected, while 2, 058 persons were recorded in Bwari Area Council, whereas Abaji Area Council recorded 2,280 cases.

Idriss added that through the Agency’s interventions with the support of other emergency stakeholders, a total of 9,813 lives saved, with only 102 houses damaged within the period under review.

“In AMAC, 6,876 persons were affected in the first flood at Ebano Hudu road by Damagaza river, Efab Estate Lokogoma, Apo – Dutsen expressway, Carters court Apo and Trademoore Estate, Lugbe.

“The second one affected 4, 368 persons in Lokogoma Carters Court Apo, Efab Estate Lokogoma, Nnamdi Azikiwe expressway by Lugbe.

“Third one, 3,060 at Nyanya phase IV. 3,528 in Nyanya phase 4, by Redeemed Church with 2, 544 at Ipent 5 road, Lokogoma.

“In Bwari Area Council, the flood affected 2058 persons at Dutsen Makaranta by Police signpost, while in Abaji Area Council 2,280 persons were affected at abattoir behind Sarkin Powa.

“We responded to 15 incidents of road crashes, 10 fire incidents with a building collapse in Kubwa, where 5 persons were rescued with 2 fatally injured. No life was lost”, the FEMA boss stated.
