Former DIG Dan-Madami faults Nigerian Islamic Affairs Council

Date:

From Ahmed Kaigama, Bauchi

Former Police Chief, Alhaji Muhammadu Dan-Madami has advocated for the re-invigoration of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs through constitutional amendments in the leadership of the organization. to reflect the federal and Islamic character of Nigeria.

Dan-Madami, a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police, said the re-invigorated council should employ efficient permanent staff from the Secretary-General downwards with clearly spelt-out functions and targets.

The former police boss at the Northeast 60th anniversary of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), held in Bauchi, at the weekend, also suggested that the organisation’s name be changed to something less dictatorial.

“Besides the fact that the word ‘Supreme’ connotes, in military circle, a dictatorial revolutionary tendency, there is no person or thing that deserves to be called such a name except Allah, the Exalted”, he said.

The former DIG explained that the Council for Islamic Affairs should start afresh by creating an umbrella organisation that will mobilise Muslims from all nooks and corners, by building upon the already stabilized structures of the numerous Muslim associations all over the country.

He, therefore, suggested for the formation of a Federation of Muslim Association of Nigeria (FMAN) on the basis of Shahadatain, Al-Qur’an, Sunnah and unity of Qibla, to be headed by one leader from among Muslims in Nigeria and governed by a National Council (Majlis-ash Shurah).
