Man, 25, docked for throwing his 2-year old son in river

A 25 year-old truck driver, Ibrahim Sanni, was yesterday remanded in prison custody by a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged murder of his two-year-old baby.

Sanni, who resides at Kargi village, Kubau local government area of Kaduna, was remanded for allegedly throwing his baby boy into the Kubau River, on Dec. 28, 2013.

The Chief Magistrate Mr. Bashri Shittu, ordered that the accused be kept in prison custody under Section 185 (A) of the Criminal Penal Code pending an advice from the Ministry of Justice.

Shittu said that his court had no jurisdiction, to try the case adding that the accused was only brought for cognisance.

He said that the accused had the right to apply for his bail at the state high court and adjourned the case till June 25, for further mention.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sani Umar, had prayed the court to remand the accused in prison custody pending full investigation into the case.

He told the court that the accused was accosted by the mother of the baby, Shafa’atu Umaru, who reported the case to the Divisional Police Headquaters, Anchau Kubau.

He said the accused was caught by Shafa’atu while throwing the baby into the river, but she was unable to recover the baby.

The prosecutor said that, the accused was the former husband to the mother of the baby.

He said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 1991.

When the charge was read to the accused, he told the court that he understood the charge against him. (NAN)
