Humanitarian Day: FEMA, Foundation distribute food items to IDPs

The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says it marked the 2023 Humanitarian day with the distributions of assorted food items to some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Wasa resettlement area of Abuja, the nation’s capital city.
FEMA said it was able to put smiles on the faces of the IDPs, in partnership with Near Foundation, a non-profit organization, focused on serving humanity by creating equal opportunities for orphans and the disadvantaged in the society irrespective of religious or cultural affiliation.
The agency’s Information Officer, Danson Magaji, said such kind of partnership aligns to the FEMA’s vision, which is reducing disaster disk for a safe and happy FCT.
Distributing the items, Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, explained FEMA decided to partner with the Foundation to celebrate the day, because of its track record in humanitarian gestures.
He adds: “Even though the day is passed, we keyed into the program to ensure that we put smiles on their (IDPs) faces.
“You can see we are giving them food items, we will also be providing a borehole to reduce difficulty in accessing clean and healthy water in this settlement”.
Commending the partnership, Mr. Mohammed Ali, of Near Foundation reflected on the seamless working environment FEMA had afforded them to thrive in fulfilling their mandate in the FCT.
“We are here for the distribution of food items to the displaced persons, because they need it, this is to mark the World Humanitarian Day.
“Working with FEMA has made it smooth and easy and we look forward for continued partnership in lifting the lives of those who are downtrodden in the FCT”, he stated.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries mainly women and children, the women leader of the IDP settlement in Wasa, Lydia Haruna, expressed delight for the initiative.
She thanked FEMA management and Near Foundation for not forgetting them, but insisting on alleviating their sufferings by providing food items and borehole water.
World Humanitarian Day which is celebrated in 19th September annually is an occasion to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of crisis-affected, people and for the safety and security of aid workers.
