The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has said it will not rest on its effort at ensuring that the city is of shanties and illegal structures, which are easily turned into hideouts for criminals in the city.

The Council in a statement by its Head, Public Relations (PR), Mrs. Grace Zamani, restated that AMMC will ensure that shanties and illegal structures demolished during its clean up exercise along Nyanya corridor will not resurface again.

It would be recalled that in continuation of the its effort to rid the city of miscreants, shanties and illegal business operators, the joint task team led by the AMMC had recently embarked on clean up exercise in Kugbo auto mechanic workshops and others along the Nyanya area.

Following the incident, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sen. Bala Mohammed had ordered a cleanup of the entire Nyanya corridor after the recent double explosions that rocked the area, in less than three weeks.

“We have been engaged in exercise like this in the past; the difference is that we are now more diligent, because of the recent security challenges in this axis.”

“You will agree with me that an open area can be more easily policed than an area which is clustered with slums and shanties,” the statement quoted the Coordinator, AMMC , Arc Reuben Okoya.

The statement added that it is envisaged that the exercise, which is a routine executed by the Council and its relevant Departments as well as the Police, Army and other law enforcement agencies, will help to restore better control of the area.

Meanwhile, some members of the Kugbo Casket Manufacturing Association in the area have reacted angrily over the destruction of their properties, adding that it will lead to an increase of insecurity in the FCT.
