The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has commiserated with Senator Shaibu Afolabi Salisu (Ogun Central Senatorial District) on the demise of his mother, Alhaja Laeefat Amope Okunrounmu at the age of 89.

In a condolence message to Senator Salisu who is also chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, the Senate President reiterated the important role mothers play in society as the first builders of character in children, a role he said the deceased played excellently and was well recognized for.

“Not only was she a devout Muslim, she rose to become the Otun Iya Sunna of Oke – Itoku Mosque and was also a pillar of the Akorede Alasalatu Society among other devotions she poured her lovely soul into,” Senator Akpabio said in the condolence letter.

“My brother, I am also informed that your mother who was the Matriarch of the Salisu (Omoyayi) family and also of the Okunrounmu family of Oke – Itoku, Abeokuta transcended her maternal guidance beyond family as an esteemed community leader and for which her maternal grace will be greatly missed.

“Conscious of the fact that she left behind a worthy legacy, I can readily comfort you to bask in the legacies she left behind one of which was raising up a strong family one of whom is presently Senator, Ogun Central Senatorial District.

“I need not reiterate that mothers are great gifts to mankind being the first builders of character in children and should be appreciated for the role they play in our lives and this is a role I know Mama played out excellently.”
