The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has described the late elder statesman and physician, Professor Umaru Shehu as a dedicated public servant, nationalist, community leader, consummate physician, and erudite scholar,
The National Publicity Secretary, of ACF Professor Tukur Mohammad-Baba stated this in a statement made available to the media in Kaduna.
The statement lauded the contribution to national growth and development of the erudite scholar who was an Emeritus Professor at the University of Maiduguri and a highly respected member of the Borno Elders Committee.
. it would be recalled that late Professor Shehu was one of the earliest northern Nigerians to qualify as medical doctors, saying that the deceased “pursued advance studies and started medical practice in the United Kingdom but elected to return home, served and rose through the ranks of his professional career in the service of the Government of the Northern Region and later the that of the Northeastern State Government.”
According to Mohammad-Baba, “Professor Shehu had also served a memorable stint at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the ABU’s Institute of Health.”
“Professor Shehu was also one-time Vice Chancellor, University of Nigeria (UNN) and had served the World Health Organization (WHO), to very briefly list a few of his extensive and meritorious public service engagements.

“ACF, therefore extends profound condolences to Professor Shehu’s family, friends, professional colleagues, the Federal and Borno State Governments, ABU, the numerous national and international tertiary institutions and organizations that Professor Shehu had served at one time or another, as well as the entire people of the nation and northern Nigeria in particular.”
