Dozens feared killed in bomb blast in Mubi

Dozens are feared killed in a bomb blast believed to be targeted at football fans, yesterday in Kabang area of Mubi South local government area of Adamawa state.

There were conflicting reports last night on the exact number of persons killed in the explosion. Sources told our correspondent that 14 were killed in the incident, but AFP cited a police source as saying at least 40 people were killed in the explosion at a football field.

“There has been a bomb explosion at a football field this evening and so far more than 40 people have bee n killed,” an officer in the town told AFP.

A military source who told Reuters that the number of those dead and injured was not clear as at last night, added that several bodies were recovered and the wounded were still being evacuated.

No group has claimed responsibility, though Boko Haram has staged attacks in the area in the past.

Reports from the area revealed that, the incident happened yesterday evening, around 6.30pm, and that the attack occurred when some residents were relaxing at a drinking joint situated at township primary, adjacent to a football pitch.

Confirming the attack, Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Othman Abubakar, said the DPO of the local government area reported the incident to the command, adding that 12 people who were critically injured were rushed to the General Hospital in Mubi.
