The Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Abdulganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin has stressed the need for mainstreaming of Geographic Information System (GIS) in especially planning and implementation of public Projects.
Surv. Adebomehin who made this known in his address Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 2023 GIS Day celebration in Abuja stated that the theme of the celebration which was, “Celebrating the GIS Professionals” was inspiring, and would provoke conversations not only on the relevance of GIS, but the critical roles of the GIS professionals in issues around National Security and Socioeconomic Development that was durable for Nigeria.
While noting that GIS was the nucleus of any enterprises or operations, he said the fact that GIS was a dominant and very Important tool for data collection, their organization analysis and distribution as well as retrieval for updating of management plans, makes a reliable Decision-Making Support System (DMSS) for effective execution of projects and implementation of programmes.
Continuing, Surv. Adebomehin said GIS was a veritable apparatus for urban planning and development, soil types identification and analysis, water management, among many other civil works.
Speaking on the topic: “Deploying Geospatial Solutions across Sectors” Mr. Joseph K. Aro, Co-Founder and Director of Operations, Observatory Earth Analytics said as the future of GIS unfolds, one resounding truth remains that it demands long-term planning and sustained Investment.
Aro said the transformative potential of GIS was not realized overnight and requires a strategic vision that extends beyond Immediate objectives.
