The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria(APWEN )has inaugurated Engineer Dr. Adebisi R. Osim, an engineer representing the Rehabilitation of Calabar-Ikom-Kastina Ala Section II (Ikom—Alesi-Iyamoyong), as its 18th president.
At the investiture in Abuja on Saturday, President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engineer Margaret Aina Oguntala, reiterated her commitment to championing the cause of women in engineering and advancing the goals of APWEN.
“Together, we shall break new ground, inspire future generations, and contribute to the collective success of the engineering profession. I am confident that your tenure will be marked by excellence and transformative initiatives that will elevate APWEN to new heights.
“Your leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the engineering profession are a testament to the formidable strength that women bring to the forefront of innovation and progress. Your dedication and commitment have brought us to this remarkable point, and for that, I commend each and every one of you.
“As we embark on this journey, let me assure you that the Nigerian Society of Engineers under my leadership is wholeheartedly committed to collaborating with APWEN,” Oguntala said.
She added that the NSE recognizes the significance of women in engineering and is dedicated to fostering an environment where every engineer, regardless of gender, can contribute meaningfully to the shared vision.
In her inaugural address, Adebisi promised to work together, stating that unity is strength to move the association forward.
According to her ,”We shall not only focus on the girl-child but also extend our hands as mothers and hold up our boys as well, fostering diversity and equality.”
According to her, the practice of providing equal access to opportunities and resources will become integrated into the greater society.
“In line with this, we will commence a program tagged ‘STEM FOR ALL,’ an all-inclusive outreach program targeted at both the primary and secondary school population. Hands-on science is one of the best ways to get children thinking creatively.”
Adebisi outlined her vision for the association, emphasizing empowerment, inspiration, and elevation. She said “Together we will create an environment where each voice is not only heard but valued. We will harness the collective brilliance of our diverse membership to drive positive change, innovation, and a lasting impact in the engineering landscape.”
“My leadership approach will prioritize mentorship, support, and a shared commitment to excellence, ensuring that every engineer in APWEN contributes meaningfully to our collective success.”
She also pledged to empower engineers, focusing on cultivating skills and creating opportunities.
“We will establish initiatives for ongoing professional development, workshops, and training sessions to keep engineers abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies. In addition, we will develop platforms for engineers to connect and share.”
In her welcome remarks, the immediate past president, Engineer Dr. Elizabeth J. Eterigho, acknowledged various challenges as opportunities for learning and highlighted the dedication, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of shared goals during her tenure.
Congratulating the 18th President of APWEN, she expressed gratitude and joy in handing over the baton, trusting that Engr. Dr. Adebisi R. Osim would elevate the association to new heights.
