The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved N5.6 billion for the completion of Mangu Dam, a component of Mangu Regional Water Supply Scheme in Plateau State.

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, while addressing journalists after the FEC meeting, said the contract was awarded to Messrs Infiouest Limited with a completion period of 36 months.

The minister said upon completion, the project would serve about 10 communities with an estimated population of about 700,000. Maku said the benefiting communities included Mangu, Gindiri, Mangu

Hale, Kudunu, Vodni, Payam, Pushit, Ampier, Mangun and Lagai. Also speaking, the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, said the project would generate employment opportunities for about 12,000 people within the ten communities.

According to her, a budgetary provision of N5.4bn has been made available to the ministry by President Goodluck Jonathan from the Hydraulic Infrastructure and National Security Fund, with another N100 million appropriated for the project in the 2014 budget; while the balance of N101 million will be provided in the 2015 budget to complete the project.
