A new poverty alleviation programme may be established to address the needs of the lees privileged in the country following the recommendation of the National Conference that the federal government should create a short-term poverty alleviation programme to cater for the needs of the poor.
Accordingly, the delegates said the government, as a matter of national importance, should create a venture in the manner of the previous poverty alleviation programme but with specific targets being children from the less privileged homes, women and the elderly, to address these categories of persons.
Though the status of the women to benefit from the scheme was not specified and was the elderly, delegates insisted that without such venture the gap between the poor and the rich in the society would continue to widen.
Also, the conference also recommended long-term poverty alleviation programme to create specific ventures that would be tapped into by fresh graduates and other unemployed youth who had graduated but unable to secure to employment.
Deputy Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, while putting the proposal for adoption said that the recommendation is meant to specifically create a skill acquisition for the fresh graduate and the unemployed.
Ventures to be created included mechanical, electrical and trades that the youth and other unemployed would acquire technical skills. It was not clear whether the beneficiaries would be entitled to allowances during the period of their apprenticeship.
