MAN Urges Kano Govt to Fast-Track Electricity Reform, Tax Harmonisation

Date:

By Augustine Aminu

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Kano Branch, has commended the Kano State House of Assembly and the state government for moves to establish a legal and regulatory framework for the electricity market in the state.

The association, however, urged the government to expedite the passage and implementation of the proposed Electricity Bill, saying reliable and affordable power supply is critical to the survival and competitiveness of businesses and industries in Kano.

In a statement dated August 10, 2026, and signed by Alhaji Mohammed Bello Isyaku Umar, Chairman, Bompai/Jigawa Branch, and Alhaji Nura Safiyanu Madugu, Chairman, Sharada/Challawa Branch, MAN said persistent electricity challenges had continued to increase production costs and affect investment and employment in the manufacturing sector.

According to the association, the proposed electricity legislation would create an enabling environment for investment in power generation and distribution while supporting industrial growth across the state.

MAN Calls for Tax and Levy Harmonisation

MAN also called on the Kano State House of Assembly to urgently pass the bill seeking to harmonise taxes and levies in the state.

The association said the multiplicity of taxes and levies imposed on businesses increased the cost of doing business and could discourage existing and prospective investors.

It urged the state government to streamline taxes and charges and establish a transparent, predictable and business-friendly tax administration system that would promote industrial development while ensuring sustainable government revenue.

Manufacturers Seek Faster Release of C of O

The association further appealed to the Kano State Government to accelerate the issuance of new Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) to companies that surrendered their existing certificates as part of the state’s recertification exercise.

MAN said some companies had complied with the directive by surrendering their old certificates but were yet to receive the new documents.

The delay, it noted, was creating difficulties for affected businesses, particularly in accessing credit facilities from banks and other financial institutions.

The association explained that land and property serve as important collateral for manufacturers seeking loans for working capital, business expansion, machinery acquisition and other productive investments.

It therefore urged the government to establish an efficient process for the prompt issuance of new Certificates of Occupancy to eligible applicants.

MAN Commends Kano Infrastructure Projects

MAN also commended the Kano State Government for its infrastructure development initiatives, particularly in road construction and rehabilitation, urban development, drainage and water supply.

The association said the projects were important to creating a more conducive environment for businesses and industries to operate, expand and contribute to the state’s economic development.

It reaffirmed its readiness to work with the Kano State Government, House of Assembly and other stakeholders to promote industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.

According to MAN, reliable electricity, a simplified tax regime and efficient land administration are key pillars for attracting investment, strengthening existing industries and creating employment opportunities.

The association urged the state government to accord the issues priority and take decisive steps to strengthen the confidence of manufacturers and investors in Kano.

MAN Kano Branch assured the government of its continued support and partnership in pursuing sustainable industrial and economic development in the state.
