FG unveils N40bn Abuja expressway expansion project

The Federal Government has unveiled the contract for the rehabilitation and expansion of the outer southern expressway (OSEX), phase I, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, signaling the commencement of actual work on the project.

The contract, which was awarded at the cost of N39, 829,749,225.69 with a completion period of 36 months by the FCT Administration to Messers CGC Nigeria,  in 2013, extends from the Villa roundabout passing through Kuje and terminating at the intersect of Trunk Road A2 in Gwagwalada,  FCT.

Peoples Daily reports that the road, which has a length of 65 kilo metres 4 carriageways of 10 lanes, with eight bridges at four interchange locations and four pedestrian bridges  as well as other infrastructural services like power supply and street lightening .

Preforming the ground-breaking ceremony for the project yesterday, in Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan said the road, when completed, will further alleviate the hardship being expressed by the FCT residents and other road users as they commute to work daily.

Represented by the Vice-President, Namadi  Sambo, he added that it will also help to reduce pressure on other roads and save the man hours spent on the road as they move about in the pursuit of their legitimate businesses.

Earlier in his remark, the FCT minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, who was represented at the occasion by the minister of state, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, disclosed that the original design for the road was done in 1982, with two lanes, and was twice expanded in 2000 and 2007 respectively into its current 4 lanes.
