The Provost, College of Health Sciences, University Ilorin (Unilorin) Prof A.B.O Omotoso has noted that the recent security challenges in Nigeria has discouraged foreign doctors to contribute their quota to national development.
Omotosho, who stated this during the induction of 2014 medical graduands of University of Ilorin, said some of the health problems in this twenty-first century needs collaboration of local and foreign doctors.
Omotoso said, a glance at the Nigerian healthcare system reveals that some of its strength and weakness may be due to its population size andsystemic defect.
“While the medical training indeed is adequate and comparable with global standards, nothing quite insulate the doctors in Nigeria from the Herculean task brought about by the extraneous factors.
“It is a social situation to which we must all rise, putting all sufficiently trained hands on deck. Poverty and ignorance affect access to and maximisation of available health care services.
“Also, bad roads prevent quick access to the hospital and lack of power may cause otherwise avoidable delays with surgical procedures.
The provost urged the new doctors to serve with sense of humility stressing that “A doctor do not need to carry stethoscope around his neck; he carries responsibility on his shoulders and caters for the life of society-on the most literal level.”
