Peace Conference delegates in Yola task media on peace building

Date:

Delegates at the three-day International Peace Conference, organised by Adamawa Peacemakers Initiative, in collaboration with American University of Nigeria (AUN), have challenged the Nigerian media to entrench conflict resolution mechanism in reporting crisis in the country.

The International Peace Conference, which was held at the Robert Pastor Library and e-Resource Center, AUN main campus, focused on developing practical solutions to insecurity in the country.

Speaking at the event, the delegates pointed out that good governance and rule of law are the major ingredients in entrenching peace in the society, even as they lamented the ongoing crackdown on the nation’s media industry.

The Nigerian media were also urged to avoid sensationalising and glamourising crimes and conflicts, but to report for the purpose of promoting unity and peace in the country.

They also condemned commercialisation of news by journalists, saying this practice which negates the fundamentals of professional journalism also restricts opportunity for the voiceless poor members of the society.

To this end, they called for sanctions against erring reporters and newspapers as a measure to prevent this challenge in the nation’s media industry, even as they urged the public to avoid patronising junk media houses.

Meanwhile, the conference featured activities like visit to internally displaced persons in Bole community by the AUN/API, during which material and moral assistance were offered the victims of conflict by the organisers.
